If you are a blogger, non-fiction writer, novelist or other then November is the month for you. The whole month is geared toward writers. There are three events dedicated to writers and the goal of getting writers writing as much as possible. Need help finishing that book? Need some motivation to blog more often? Then these events were created with you in mind!
NaNoWriMo - A Fiction Marathon
The event that I am most familiar with is called NaNoWriMo which stands for National Novel Writing Month. This fiction writing event encourages novelists and other fiction writers to write 50,000 words in the month of November. The goal is quantity not quality. Writers are told to focus on writing and not to go back and edit. That can be done after the month is over. This program is well organized with local support people who set-up "write-ins" and other gatherings to motivate the writers.
Write NonFiction in November
The Write NonFiction in November event is new to me. This is one blogger's response to NaNoWriMo. This event is likely not as large as the fiction one but it does seem like there is a good crowd participating.
I had planned on being a rebel non-fiction writer in the NaNoWriMo until a colleague told me about this event. The main goal for me is to find something that will really get me writing. If I can fit in with this group then perhaps that is a better place for me.
Blogging with NaBloPoMo
The third event in November is called National Blog Posting Month (hence NaBloPoMo) and is sponsored by BlogHer. I learned about this event from genealogist Michael Hait, CG who participated last year and is also doing it again this year. This event is geared toward getting bloggers to write every day for a month. The website provides blogging prompts to give bloggers some suggested topics. (please note that the Geneabloggers website provides writing prompts for genealogy bloggers every day of the year)
Whatever your genre preference is for writing, take advantage of the support you will get and join one of these events. If not this year, mark it on your calendar for next year. You may end up finishing up that book you've been working on!
I am participating in NaBloPoMo. Being a relatively new blogger, I am always looking for fresh topics and motivation to blog. It has been really tough, however, to write something worth reading every single day. But the Geneablogger prompts are helpful as are others such as Sepia Saturday. My problem is that I over-think everything. I can't just sit and type, letting my thoughts flow willy-nilly. I have to think it over for a long time before actually putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
ReplyDeleteI also participate in two writer's groups with a family history focus; one of them is online using a G+ hangout. We have to adjust our guidelines a little to make the hangout flow smoothly, but it is an awesome way to meet "face-to-face" with folks living on opposite sides of town or who are traveling and don't want to miss a meeting.
I learned yesterday that is is also National memoir Writing Month. I'm participating in National blog writing month and so far so good. guess i better go write something for today.
